I get very nervous at the start of races. Today was no different. Today was the 5 mile race at the prison – the 4th of 6 races in the Frostbite Friendly League. And it was flipping freeeeezing!!!!
There were 420 other senior runners in the race and 49 other runners from the BRJ running club. I got there in plenty of time, had a bit of a warm up and headed to the start line. I was so nervous! I always get nervous at races – although I am capable of running 5 miles, there is always the possibility of a DNF, particularly if the course is really muddy.
The course was not as bad as I had heard that it might be. It was a little muddy in places and there was a steep hill that we had to run up twice, but the mile markers seemed to come quite quickly. There was brilliant support from the BRJ running club around the course. As I was the last runner in for the club I also had a group of 6 or so BRJ runners who had run back for me once they had finished to encourage me to push on to the end. It was a massive boost and helped me get a PB by about 40 seconds that I had set on an easier 5 mile course in November.
Maybe this Janathon thing is actually doing me some good!
